"TILT-UP WALL DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION"

Tilt-up concrete wall construction as we know it today is one of the most commonly used practices in the country for industrial and commercial low- to mid-rise buildings. Tilt-up wall construction typically consists of forming and casting concrete wall panels on site in a horizontal position, then ‘tilting’ the walls into their vertical position. The primary benefit of this method is that it gains the labor and material cost efficiency of pre-cast wall construction methods (as compared to vertical cast-in-place walls) without the limitations associated with transporting pre-cast panels from the plant to the site. The design process for most tilt-up wall panels includes a combination of ACI 318 Chapter 11.8 (Slender Wall Analysis) and Chapter 22 (Sectional Strength). ACI 551.2 Design Guide for Tilt Up Concrete Panels and Tilt-Up Concrete Association’s (TCA) The Tilt-Up Construction and Engineering Manual serve as two of the primary references for designers. This presentation will provide a general overview of the design process for tilt-up concrete wall panels as well as the typical construction process utilized in the Houston area.
