Join ASCE EWRI Houston for an in-person lunch with a technical presentation by the transatlantic USACE and Delft University of Technology team on the research, data collection, modeling, and engineering that went into the USACE Bolivar Roads Gate System, part of the USACE proposed Galveston Bay storm surge barrier system.
Coastal flood risk reduction in the Netherlands and Texas: designing the next generation of storm surge barriers
This presentation will focus on the design of future flood risk reduction strategies for the Netherlands and the Houston – Galveston Bay region. The first part will highlight advances in flood management in the Netherlands and highlight projects such as the Dutch Delta works, the mega-nourishment in front of the Dutch coast, and the present and future projects for flood protection. The second part will present the studies that were undertaken for Galveston Bay since 2012 with involvement of TU Delft and Dutch experts. These include the initial conceptual proposals for the Ike Dike / coastal spine, as well as more focused studies on alternatives for the Galveston Ring barrier and the Bolivar Roads storm surge barrier. It is investigated how local interests such as navigation can be accommodated to come to alternative designs for the storm surge barrier. The presentation is concluded with an overview of remaining challenges and an R&D agenda for future work.

Before joining the USACE, Galveston District, Dr. Das was a tenured Associate Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Jackson State University (JSU). He worked at JSU from 2008 to 2017 mainly focusing on teaching and research related to hydraulic and coastal engineering. At JSU, he worked on several research grants funded by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Army Research Office (ARO), National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, MS Department of Transportation and US Army Corps of Engineers. Between 2003 and 2008, he worked for AECOM Engineers (Former URS Corporation) where he worked extensively on storm surge modeling, parallel computing and coastal structure design in shallow and deep-water environment. At AECOM, he participated numerous hydrodynamic and morphodynamic studies in river, tidally and wind dominated coastal regions along the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf coasts. During 1996-1998, he worked for ASPAC Consultants, Thailand where he worked on multiple coastal engineering projects ranging from feasibility study to design.
