SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Join your peers for the next SEI Houston Chapter Luncheon Technical Session:

"The 1983 Rehabilitation of the Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge - Truss Bridges in the Modern Era"

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Maryland recently collapsed after a brief collision with the MV Dali, highlighting infrastructure fragility and public funding disconnect.

In a one-hour session, Richard will discuss his early-career project: the 1983 rehabilitation of the Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge, Texas's second-longest truss span. After 25 years, plans were made to replace its 7-inch lightweight concrete deck with an 8-inch hardrock deck, raising the dead load by 71% and raising stability concerns.

Richard and Dean Van Landuyt developed an economic strategy to strengthen the bridge, seeking FHWA variances for overstressed elements. He’ll cover TxDOT's modifications and the bridge's performance since.

Richard will engage all audiences, sharing insights from 1980s engineering and showcasing tools of the time. A few slides will also cover significant modern truss bridge failures.
