SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
Join your peers for the next SEI Houston Chapter Luncheon Technical Session:
"Long Span Three I-Girder Integral Steel Straddle Bent Application for I10/US69 Beaumont Eastex"
To enhance redundancy and eliminate frequent and costly inspections of fracture-critical steel structures, Volkert worked with TxDOT Bridge Division to develop a triple I-beam, system-redundant integral steel bent cap solution. Design utilized a two-step approach: (1) Overall section design in accordance with AASHTO “LRFD BDS” using a 3-D FEM beam model; and (2) 3-D nonlinear FEM shell analyses to design girder/cap connections and verify system redundancy requirements using AASHTO/NSBA “Guide Specification GSFCM-1-UL”. Based on the linear and nonlinear modeling and analyses performed and special detail development, it is confirmed that the three-girder system with internal diaphragms accommodated the necessary load redistribution to ensure safety and limit component stresses and strains after tensile/fatigue fracture of a main load carrying member in the cap.
