EWRI: Climate Change and Rainfall IDF Statistics Technical Webinar

Join EWRI and Dr. Daniel Wright, PhD, Center for Climate Research, University of Wisconsin-Madison for a technical webinar on climate change and rainfall IDF statistics.
There is overwhelming evidence that rainfall extremes are growing more severe due to human-induced climate warming. This understanding, however, has not translated into actionable information needed by hydrologists and engineers. In this presentation, we will see that existing rainfall intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) statistics such as the “100-year storm”—for example, from NOAA’s Atlas 14 project—are often inadequate for current and future needs. This translates to serious deficiencies in our hydrologic design standards and infrastructure. We will discuss two solutions to address this challenge for both current and future conditions. From there, we’ll see what Wisconsin is doing to rise to that challenge, and close with some thoughts on the hurdles that scientists, practicing engineers, and decision makers must break down together to secure our communities against future rainfall.
