The presentation will cover research on the treatment of hypersaline wastewater arising during oil and gas exploration and production. The Permian Basin generates approximately one billion gallons of produced water daily, typically with total dissolved solids concentrations greater than 100,000 mg/L. Managing and reusing such wastewaters with salinity 3-5 times that of seawater containing myriad toxic (in)organic substances and high turbidity poses significant challenges. First, high-rate (electro)coagulation, sedimentation, and flotation processes to remove suspended solids for internal reuse during hydraulic fracturing using iron and aluminum coagulants will be discussed. We will conclude by analyzing physical-chemical alterations to ultra-high pressure reverse osmosis membranes during desalination for out-of-basin beneficial reuse.
